Well worth 10 mins of your time: the struggle to save a critically endangered bird at the southern end of #NZ. And no, it isnā€™t #kakapo! Beautifully put together by students at University of Otago with help from the Southern NZ Dotterel Team at Department of Conservation. youtu.be/F8WoN43rhzM?siā€¦

Our team are braving adverse weather to change #kakapo transmitters on Anchor Island. Several birds have been roosting in holes - perhaps for better shelter (they also roost under vegetation and up trees). Hereā€™s Waa underground - photo by Maddy Whittaker. #conservation #parrots

Tahu the #takahe had a lucky escape recently after wandering 40km from the Greenstone Valley. Bite marks on her foot showed that sheā€™d escaped an encounter with a stoat or ferret before she was recaptured at Mavora Lakes. #conservation @NgāiTahu ngaitahu.iwi.nz/connect-2/connā€¦

One #kakapo has got over the fence at Maungatautari in the last 3 months, but a new GPS unit meant we picked up Otepoti quickly. Weā€™re still monitoring closely and working to understand how/why theyā€™re escaping. Pic: DOC. #conservation #parrots @Maungatautari1

#kakapo Madeline has been transferred to hospital after being found ill on Whenua Hou with a beak injury. Sheā€™s from the genetically important Fiordland lineage. Big thanks to the team at The Wildlife Hospital - Dunedin for their care. #conservation Pic: Lydia Uddstrom

It's early days, but the new #takahe population in the Greenstone has done well in its first year. All 28 founders are alive, and last year 7-10 chicks hatched. Breeding starts again soon, so we can't wait to see what happens this year! #conservation doc.govt.nz/news/media-relā€¦

Sad news from the #kakapo world: Ranger, a 5 year old male, has been found dead on Anchor Island. He appeared to have died in a tree fall during recent storms. A reminder that animals have accidents too. There are 246 kākāpō left. #conservation #parrots Pic: Jake Osborne
