🚨*New Paper Alert*🚨 What are the most effective ways to fight climate change? What are the returns to subsidies for wind and solar? What about EV subsidies or energy efficient appliance rebates? How about raising revenue through fuel taxes or cap and trade auctions? 1/:

Obviously not the biggest news of the day, but James Scott has passed away. Any social scientist who hasn't read "Seeing like a State" should put it on their list. An amazing qualitative and erudite refutation of the idea that expert knowledge/"policy impact" is our main job.

I'm saddened to hear that Jim Scott has passed. I took a seminar with him as an undergrad - 'Rivers' - and it was one of the most remarkable experiences I've ever had. I'm looking forward to reading these last notes.

Sharing a new study led by Jeffrey Shaman out in Science Advances. We quantified suicide contagion associated with celebrity suicide events using a mechanistic model and data from the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (988 Lifeline) and the National Vital Statistics System.

Guiding words: “[With climate change] the rich will find their world to be more expensive, inconvenient, uncomfortable, disrupted, and colorless—in general, more unpleasant and unpredictable, perhaps greatly so. The poor will die.” –Kirk R. Smith, PhD, MPH (1947–2020).

🚨New pre-print🚨 2023 was a near-record year for #ValleyFever in #California following transition from drought to atmospheric rivers in winter 2022/23. Following a second wet winter of 2023/24 in California, we forecast continued high incidence of #ValleyFever for 2024 into 2025

It’s kind of wild to me that, as of two weeks ago, there are now 3 large cluster randomized trials across five countries in Sub-Saharan Africa showing that giving every kid antibiotics reduces child mortality by ~14% and I don’t see anyone talking about it!

Biodiversiy is declining, yet we have limited knowledge about how that affects human well-being. My work linking bats, insecticide use, and human infant health is out today in Science (science.org/doi/10.1126/sc…), and tells a complex story about how those are connected.
