The wildflower Daucus carota is known as “Queen Anne’s Lace”. The name may reference St. Anne, “Queen of Heaven”, and patron saint of lacemakers. The tiny red flower at the centre of the inflorescence is said to represent a drop of blood from her pricked finger. #FairytaleTuesday

Cleomes are known by the names ‘bee plant’, because bees love them, and ‘spider flower’, because the long stamens protruding from the flowers give them a “spidery” appearance. In the contemporary ‘language of flowers’, Cleomes convey the message “elope with me”. #FolkloreThursday

There’s no sign of any wet weather on the horizon this morning, but here’s a rain-splashed bee holding tightly onto an Echinacea flower, photographed a few days ago. #FlowersOnFriday #pollinators

Pilosella aurantiaca is a “hawkweed”; the Ancients believed hawks harvested juice from this plant to strengthen their eyesight. Other folk names are “Devil’s paint-brush”, and in England “Grimm the Collier”, inspired by the black, sooty hairs covering it. #folklore #wildflowers

A tale tells of three kittens who washed their mittens and left them to dry on a tree. Along came a mischievous fairy who glued them to the tree’s branches. If you visit a wood on a sunny March day, you can still see their mittens decorating the trees to this day! #FolkloreSunday

The Aster, or ‘starwort’, is a birth #flower of #September, named after the goddess Astraea who metamorphosed into the constellation #Virgo when she fled the Earth. It is said her tears fell from the heavens as she mourned mankind’s loss of innocence, and transformed into Asters.

I’ve always wanted to visit a sunflower farm, and here I am amongst lots of smiley faces (both of floral and human kind!) at Ha Ha Farm in Norfolk! đŸŒ»đŸŒ»đŸŒ»#hahafarm

An old Breton superstition (from France’s Brittany region) says that if a maiden touches a marigold with her bare foot at sunrise, she will miraculously “understand the language of the birds”. Just remember to check for bees foraging amongst the #flowers though! #FairytaleTuesday

The Morning Glory, Ipomoea tricolor, is another birth flower of September. In old England these flowers were called “life of man” because they are in bud in the morning, open by noon & wilt by evening. In the language of flowers they are an emblem of affection. #FolkloreThursday
