High rates of overdiagnosis are a critical barrier to organized prostate cancer screening. Magnetic resonance imaging with targeted biopsy has shown the potential to address this challenge, but the implications of its use in organized prostate cancer screening are unknown. #EAU21

Study published today in NEJM by KI researchers @tobiasnordstrom, Martin Eklund and others indicates that screening by MRI and targeted biopsies could potentially cut overdiagnoses in #prostatecancer screening by half. #EAU21 European Association of Urology (EAU) Danderyds Sjukhus AB bit.ly/3qYf8jp

🇸🇪 randomised trial - presented at #EAU21 & published at NEJM: MRI with targeted biopsy vs standard noninferior to standard biopsy for detecting clinically significant prostate cancer but resulted in less detection of clinically insignificant cancers nejm.org/doi/pdf/10.105…

Is systematic biopsies in MRI-positive men the new pathway? Keeps the upside of MRI (spare men from bx, less GG1) and syst bx (less overestimated tumor burden)

A novel blood test can reduce the number of #prostatecancer MRIs performed by a third while further preventing the detection of minor, low-risk tumours. New study in The Lancet Oncology by KI researchers Tobias Nordström, Martin Eklund, et al. Danderyds Sjukhus AB bit.ly/37GgdDI

Combination of blood-based risk prediction and MRI way forward to shift benefit-harm balance in #prostatecancer #screening. Proud to share results, grateful to participants and funders. #sthlm3 Cancerfonden

MRI-based screening reduced the number of both lifetime biopsies and overdiagnosis by approximately 50% and had a high probability of being cost-effective than the traditional PSA screening. From JAMA jamanetwork.com/journals/jamao…

Excellent updates on PROBASE (Kathleen Herkommer) SHTML3-MRI (Tobias Nordström) as well. Running circles around the US in terms of actually testing innovative screening strategies for #prostatecancer! #EAU23

Guess this is key slide from Freddie's talk. It's given me a bit of an existential crisis over past 36hrs Should we approach all localised #ProstateCancer like we now do salvageRT? i.e. put EVERYONE on surveillance, then only treat those who 'progress'?? (1/3 were T3!) #EAU23

Repeat PC screen w PSA+MRI at 2-3 yrs-> many negative MRIs & limited ca detection. Improved risk prediction & de-escalation for low risk men way forward?
