🎡🌀UNBELIEVABLE: Strong winds from Typhoon Yagi sent ferris wheel cabins in Haikou, Hainan, spinning mid-air. 💨😂 #TyphoonYagi #YAGI #Haikou

Incredible scenes in Hainan Province, China, as winds likely exceeding 130 mph tear through a city of 3 million people. #Yagi strengthened when it should have weakened, leading to a severe, and potentially devastating, impact.

The core of Typhoon #Yagi just passed over Haikou, home to 3 million people, at Category 4 strength. It’s now centered over the Qiangzhou Strait. A major disaster likely unfolding in China. While the area is typhoon-prone, this is at the upper echelon of historic impacts.

NEW: Haikou Meilan International Airport gusted to 110 mph at 10Z in the eyewall. The airport is several miles inland. City likely saw gusts of 120 to 130 mph. A few gusts of 140 mph probably occurred near Jingxinjiao in eastern Wenchang. Follow ChinaWXnerds (中国气象爱好者). #Yagi #China

This is "Invest 90L" over the northwestern Gulf of Mexico. It's still giving some heavy rains to coastal Louisiana, Mississippi and Florida. It has a low-end chance of development... OR could merge with another weak low pressure system near the Bay of Campeche. We're monitoring:

🌊A pocket of frigid air, low pressure and spin moving over the warm waters of the Great Lakes will lead to waterspouts forming. Waterspouts will be dangerous to mariners, but may also be visible from the lakeshores. MyRadar meteorologist Matthew Cappucci has an update.

Why are there still no hurricanes!? 🌀 We’re bordering on a historically silent stretch during peak season — which is far from normal. Are predictions of a “hyperactive” season a bust? I sat down with David R and Philip Klotzbach for insights. Full video in the MyRadar Weather app:

It’s peak hurricane season. The oceans are red hot. The atmosphere is primed. And not a single hurricane has formed since August 12. Something is holding back the Atlantic — but what? And could “homegrown” storms wreak havoc in the fall? Matthew Cappucci explores answers.

We'll have an outlook for the Gulf Coast out first thing Monday. Interests from Tamaulipas, Mexico to New Orleans should keep tabs on the evolution of this system, which probably will become a named storm and could be a heavy rain-maker.
