Really grateful to join post conference Cities on Volcanoes 12 fieldtrip to Santiago de Atitlán with Ixchel Project. Today we're lucky to hear directly from the abuelo-abuelas about the community around the Lake Atitlán, the volcanoes, and the issues they face due to changing landscape.
On day 2, we heard from Tz'utujil elders about Lake Atiltánand how life has changed (but also not). We also visited a group of women to learn from their everyday life and livelihoods in a post-disaster resettlement. We enjoyed their art and their food too! #CoV12 Cities on Volcanoes 12
On Day 3, we learned from master Tz'utujil artisans about their embroidery and weaving processes. We learnt about threads, colours, and techniques, and even got to try some ourselves! #CoV12 Cities on Volcanoes 12
On Day 4, we went up to Cerro de Oro, a sacred site for the Tz'utujil people. We learned about the stories around it and we discussed some of geology, and how these two come together. We also visited a local school to exchange stories around volcanoes! #CoV12 Cities on Volcanoes 12
Fourth, I was a co-organiser of a post-conference trip to Santiago Atitlán which was linked to the work that we, as part of the Ixchel Project, is doing with Tz'utujil communities in the area. Here's a bit of what we did this week! x.com/ixchelproject/…
