Platypus @BigCityBirds Dr John Martin … She’s come over from the north side and a favorite for many years but she always brings her crew and the biggest one knocks her off the perch. She’s not “dominant” but one of the gentle girl cockatoos. She’s very sweet.

Grey-headed flying-foxes can fly over 300km in a night! They are important pollinators - think of them as a giant bee 🐝 This species is listed as vulnerable to extinction due to population decline and loss of habitat - our latest research The Conversation - Australia + New Zealand theconversation.com/grey-headed-fl…

Breeding migratory shorebirds have departed, leaving only overwintering birds. Now seeing travelling resident waterbirds stopping in at Deeban (Port Hacking) for a rest before continuing to wherever they are headed for winter. Plus our regular winter visitors double-banded plover

Hugh Possingham @BigCityBirds Indeed, you’ve contributed plenty and continue to. Our paper, part of Matthew Hall’s PhD, shows that eBird & iNaturalist don’t capture bird behaviour, hence the value of @BigCityBirds 😉 onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.111…

Our friend, white ibis, hanging around with a bush stone-curlew. A familiar sight across Queensland - both have adapted to urban areas. Report your sightings using our @BigCityBirds app Keep an eye out for wing-tagged ibis across QLD: tagging in Brissy spotteron.com/bigcitybirds/i…

Platypus (139) @BigCityBirds comes and visits from the North Shore. One of our favorites and a longtime visitor. She’s very sweet and gentle. And a bit hungry when it gets cold. She gets a few almonds and is always followed by a friend who tries to push her out of the way.

To bee or not to bee. 🐝 There are un-bee-lievable benefits to supporting Australia’s native bees, like the beautiful Blue-banded Bee (Amegilla chlorocyanea) seen here. Find out how you can support native bees like these: csiro.au/en/news/All/Ar… 📹 | freya_beelady on Instagram

Do you feed cockies? “Our data suggest that SCC do not use all parts of their home range equally….This implies a role for sophisticated time and place learning, with birds matching activity to human patterns.” paper: link.springer.com/article/10.100…

Watch the body/eye language between these two. Platypus (139 @BigCityBirds ) on right and Sofie (partner of Watermelon) on left. Polite assertion of dominance… watch til end. They appear to agree they are equal? Apologies for ugly background of neighboring vile building
